About This Machine

Mary Shelley — better known as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein — was designed by John Borg and released in January 1995 by Sega Pinball of Chicago, with artwork by Paul Faris. Approximately 3,000 units were produced, making it one of the more visible titles from Sega's relatively short run as a pinball manufacturer (1994-1999).

The game features three flippers, a ramp, multiball, and an automatic plunger, but its signature element is a Frankenstein creature toy on the playfield that physically throws balls toward the flippers or bumpers. The game also uses the larger 192x64 pixel dot matrix display, and its soundtrack — with music and sound by Brian Schmidt — features Edgar Winter's classic instrumental "Frankenstein" as one of its theme songs. Robert Englund contributed to the sound, and sharp-eyed players can spot Sonic the Hedgehog dressed as a scarred Frankenstein creature in the repeating video sequences.

Though a 4-player game, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein played a behind-the-scenes role in Sega's development of the 6-player feature used on later titles: programmer Orin Day prototyped the 6-player display code on this game's display as a proof of concept before it debuted in Baywatch. With its Gothic literary theme, ball-throwing creature, and oversized DMD, it remains a distinctive entry in the mid-1990s Sega catalog.
