Football '37
About This Machine
The Genco Manufacturing Company's 1937 Football pinball machine is a rare artifact from the early days of electromechanical (EM) pinball. Produced in October 1937, when flipperless games were still evolving in complexity and design, it shows how manufacturers were already bringing popular sports themes to the playfield. Interestingly, the game's own name was fluid: the backglass carries no title at all, the playfield can be read as either " '37 Football" or "Football '37", and Genco's trade advertising variously called it "1937 Football", "Football of 1937", and "Genco's Animated 1937 Football".
In gameplay, Football offers 5 balls per play across a flipperless playfield with seven passive bumpers. A time clock feature and Genco's Electropak self-contained power unit round out the package, and a reclined backbox gives the game a distinctive profile.
The backglass is particularly notable for its light animation depicting football players running, an early example of animated, themed pinball presentation that set a precedent for future games in the genre. Little additional information about this machine has been documented, leaving these details to speak for its historical significance.
