About This Machine
Limelight is a single-player electro-mechanical pinball machine produced by Bally Manufacturing Co. in May 1940. As a pre-flipper game (the flipper would not be invented until 1947), it belonged to the era of plunger-and-gravity play, where scoring depended on the ball settling into lit pockets and rollovers, all tracked on the backglass.
Limelight dates from the final years before America's wartime material restrictions curtailed pinball production. It is a product of Bally's active pre-war output, when the Chicago firm was already one of the leading names in the coin-operated amusement trade.
