Fleetwood
About This Machine
Fleetwood, manufactured by Bally in September 1937, is a one-ball payout machine with a horse racing theme - part of the gambling-adjacent side of the 1930s coin-op business, where a single ball per coin could pay out awards. Horse racing was a favorite subject for these games, and Fleetwood fit squarely into that tradition.
The machine accepted 5-cent multiple coin play, and its playfield featured 28 trap holes that determined the outcome of each ball. Bally advertised the game as having a 30-inch backboard, an imposing presence for the era. An interesting detail for collectors: the backglass features the same outdoor scene used on Bally's 1937 'Bally's Club House'.
While little is known about Fleetwood's designer or specific development history, it is a representative example of Bally's payout machine output during the late 1930s, an era when the company - founded in 1931 - was establishing itself as one of the giants of the coin-op industry.
