About This Machine

The Aristocrat, manufactured by the A. S. Douglis Machine Company of Chicago in March 1932, is one of the earliest known pinball machines in existence. As a Pure Mechanical (PM) game, it predates not only the flipper but even the electromechanical era, arriving during the very first boom of countertop marble games that swept America in 1931 and 1932.

Like other pure-mechanical games of its day, the Aristocrat operated without electricity, relying entirely on gravity, springs, and levers. Players would launch balls with a plunger and watch them settle into scoring positions, with skillful plunging and careful nudging as the only means of influence. Little is documented about its specific playfield layout, theme, or artwork.

With no designer credited and scant surviving information, the Aristocrat remains something of an enigma. That very scarcity of documentation makes it all the more intriguing to collectors and historians seeking to fill gaps in our understanding of pinball's earliest days, when dozens of small Chicago workshops were racing to cash in on the marble-game craze.
