Far Out
About This Machine
Far Out, designed by Ed Krynski with artwork by Gordon Morison, was manufactured by Gottlieb in October 1974. A four-player electro-mechanical game with a bold psychedelic theme, its artwork reflects the counterculture aesthetic of the late 1960s and early 70s. Gottlieb built a confirmed 4,820 units, and the two-player version of the same design was released as 1974's Out of Sight.
The machine offers a solid array of playfield features, including two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, two five-bank drop targets, and two standup targets. A right ball return gate and a left outlane ball kicker give players help keeping the ball alive, and an end-of-ball bonus lets accumulated bonus points pay off at the end of each ball. The score reels display up to 99,990 points per player.
Far Out's vibrant color scheme and stylized Morison graphics evoke the era's fascination with psychedelia. As one of the lesser-known but appealing EM machines from Gottlieb's mid-1970s catalog, it offers a glimpse into the company's classic drop-target-driven design style, making it an attractive find for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
