Fairway
About This Machine
Fairway, manufactured by C. F. Eckhart & Company of Chicago in May 1935, is a single-player payout machine with a golfing theme from the heyday of 1930s gambling-style pinball. Play cost 5 cents per ball.
Its most charming feature has nothing to do with the playfield: the cabinet carries a gum vendor on its front, an early example of coin machine makers bundling merchandise vending with amusement play to broaden a game's earning power - and, in some jurisdictions, to help it pass as a vending machine rather than a gambling device.
Very little else is documented about Fairway or its creators, and Eckhart itself was active only from 1933 to 1935. As a surviving artifact of the payout-machine boom, it remains a modest but genuine piece of Depression-era coin machine history.
