About This Machine
Fair, released by D. Gottlieb & Company in May 1939, is a single-player electro-mechanical game from the pre-flipper era of pinball. It was designed by Harry Mabs, who several years later would go on to introduce the flipper to pinball on Gottlieb's 1947 'Humpty Dumpty', and features artwork by Roy Parker, the prolific artist behind many classic Gottlieb backglasses.
Little documentation survives about Fair's specific playfield features or theme, which is common for late-1930s games. As a product of two of Gottlieb's most important creative figures working in the years before the flipper transformed the game, Fair is a modest but genuine artifact of pinball's formative electro-mechanical period.
