Dude Ranch
About This Machine
Dude Ranch, designed by Don Hooker for the Bally Manufacturing Corporation (model number 552), is a Western-themed bingo machine, a distinct branch of the coin-op family that flourished in the 1950s. Unlike conventional pinball, bingo machines have no flippers: the playfield is a grid of trap holes, and the object is to land balls in holes whose numbers complete winning patterns on backglass cards.
Dude Ranch's playfield features 25 trap holes, and its backglass offers two regular cards plus one Super card, giving players multiple ways to line up winning combinations. Players shoot a series of balls, hoping each one settles into a hole that advances a line on one of the cards, with the Super card promising bigger awards.
Wrapped in a classic Western theme, Dude Ranch represents Bally's bread-and-butter business of the bingo era, when the company was the dominant maker of these games. For collectors, bingo machines like this one offer a fascinating look at a chapter of coin-op history that ran parallel to, and often outsold, flipper pinball.
