Double Up
About This Machine
Double Up, produced by the Stoner Manufacturing Company of Aurora, Illinois in January 1936, is a single-player electro-mechanical one-ball payout machine. As a payout game, it dispensed coins for winning play, placing it among the gambling-style machines that made up a large share of the mid-1930s coin-op trade. Double Up was one of Stoner's "Aristocrat" series of games.
The one-ball format gave players a single shot per nickel, concentrating all the suspense of the game into one journey down the playfield. Stoner, active from 1933 to 1941, was one of the more notable manufacturers based outside Chicago, the industry's undisputed capital.
Little else is documented about Double Up; no designer, features, or artwork details are recorded. It survives in the historical record as a representative of the payout side of 1930s pinball, a category that thrived commercially even as it attracted the legal scrutiny that would eventually push the industry toward amusement-only play.
