Double Feature
About This Machine
Double Feature, offered by the Victory Sales Company in April 1946, is a one-ball electro-mechanical horse racing game from the immediate post-war period. Like many games of this moment, it was a conversion: rather than building machines from scratch, Victory Sales rebuilt existing games, and period advertising indicates only Bally games were used as the basis for this title.
Gameplay followed the one-ball format popular at the time, in which the player received a single ball per game and the horse racing theme tied into the era's fascination with wagering-style amusements. Conversions like this one flourished in 1945-1946, when wartime restrictions on new game manufacturing had only recently lifted and demand for product outstripped supply of new machines.
Little else is documented about Double Feature. The earliest known trade advertisement is a pictureless Billboard ad from April 6, 1946, inviting operators to a showing of the game, and no designer or production information has been recorded. It survives mainly as a relic of the busy, improvisational conversion market of pinball's post-war years.
