Double Action
About This Machine
The Double Action, manufactured by Gottlieb in December 1958, is a two-player electro-mechanical (EM) pinball machine from an era characterized by innovative gameplay features and artful designs. Designed by Wayne Neyens with artwork by Roy Parker, it had a confirmed production run of 1,000 units, and its playfield design invites comparison with Gottlieb's 1959 'Miss Annabelle'.
The machine's gameplay features four flippers, five pop bumpers, two slingshots, two standup targets, and a gobble hole. Players could opt to play with either three or five balls, adding an extra layer of strategy to the game. One intriguing feature is the Double Match award, which granted 2 or 10 replays at the operator's discretion, with a maximum displayed score of 1,999 points per player.
Design-wise, the Double Action's backglass carries Gottlieb's famous slogan: "Amusement Pinballs, as American as Baseball and Hot Dogs!" The artwork features a classic 1950s aesthetic that adds to the machine's nostalgic charm, and designer Wayne Neyens, one of Gottlieb's most prolific figures, delivers a layout that remains a testament to the company's ingenuity during the EM era.
