Harley-Davidson (2nd production run)
About This Machine
The Harley-Davidson pinball machine, designed by Barry Oursler with art by Mark Sprenger, was manufactured by Midway Manufacturing Company (a subsidiary of WMS Industries, trading as Bally) in October 1991. This particular listing represents a rare second production run of approximately 200 units, reportedly made especially for Harley-Davidson dealers - distinct from the larger first production run of the same game. Attendees at the 1991 Pinball Expo in Chicago recalled seeing this special run being assembled on a mini-production line during a factory tour, though manufacturer documentation of the run has never been found.
Gameplay-wise, the Harley-Davidson features a range of elements typical of Williams/Bally's WPC-era machines. It has two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, eight stand-up targets, and three kick-out holes, providing players with numerous opportunities to accumulate points and complete objectives. Additionally, two 3-bank drop targets and two spinning targets add an extra layer of challenge, while crossover return lanes on both sides allow for varied shot paths.
As a low-production variant of an already sought-after game, this second-run Harley-Davidson is considered a rare find among collectors. Little else is documented about differences between this run and the original, including whether the playfield or internal components (such as a shaker motor) differ at all, leaving some mystery around exactly what distinguishes these 200 machines from their more common counterparts.
