Doozie
About This Machine
The Doozie, manufactured by Williams Electronics in 1968, is a notable addition to the world of electro-mechanical (EM) pinball machines. As one of only four Williams games to feature "closing flipper action," also known as zipper flippers, this machine stands out for its innovative design. When activated, the zipper flippers slide together to close the gap between them, blocking the center drain and adding a distinctive strategic wrinkle to gameplay.
The Doozie boasts an impressive array of features, including five pop bumpers, two slingshots, and five standup targets, all designed to test a player's skills and strategy. The upper ball return gate adds an extra layer of complexity, requiring players to think carefully about their shots in order to maximize their score. With a maximum displayed point score of 9,999 points, the Doozie offers plenty of opportunities for high-scoring action. Its add-a-ball twin, Williams' 1968 'Daffie', shares an identical playfield except that one pop bumper is replaced with a drop target.
The Happiness theme is reflected in the machine's artwork by Christian Marche, which features colorful graphics and playful illustrations. The Doozie was designed by Steve Kordek, a well-known pinball designer who made significant contributions to the development of the game, and 2,150 units were confirmed produced. Despite its age, the Doozie remains an interesting and challenging machine for collectors and enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into pinball's electro-mechanical heyday.
