Wizard
About This Machine
The Wizard, released in May 2022 by Headsup Pinball of Colleyville, Texas, is a licensed electro-mechanical conversion built around Gottlieb's 1977 add-a-ball game 'Team One.' Rather than an all-new design, it reuses the internal mechanisms and cabling of the source game while wearing new art: the backglass artwork is a licensed reuse from Gottlieb's 1971 Italian add-a-ball 'Wizard,' and the playfield and cabinet art are reused from Gottlieb's 1975 'Abra Ca Dabra.' Michael Ostradick served as a key concept collaborator for art finalization and logistics, with Terry Phillips also contributing to the art and concept design.
Gameplay includes dual inlanes, two flippers, two pop bumpers, two slingshots, a 5-bank of drop targets, two dip targets (labeled W and D), and a standup target, with operator-adjustable Add-A-Ball or Novelty play across 3 or 5 balls. The maximum displayed score is 1,999,990 points, and the tilt penalty can be set to end the game or dock two balls from the balls-to-play counter.
Production was planned to be limited to just 16 units -- a genuine rarity -- with 14 completed as of March 2023. The game was also offered as a standalone conversion kit, underscoring its status as a boutique, licensed reimagining of a 1970s Gottlieb classic rather than a wholly original release.
