Fortuna
About This Machine
Fortuna is a rare and enigmatic pure mechanical payout pin table of unknown manufacture. It is a French version of Rock-Ola's 1933 'World's Fair Jig-Saw,' sharing the same playfield layout.
One of the most striking aspects of Fortuna is its playfield animation: when balls fall into specific holes, puzzle pieces align to form a picture of Le Palais du Trocadéro, a grand building constructed in Paris for the Universal Exhibition of 1878 (its main building was later torn down in 1935, with its two wings reused to build the Palais de Chaillot in 1937, which still stands today). This intricate mechanism is a testament to the ingenuity of early mechanical pinball designers. The cabinet front features two coin slots on one side and a payout cup on the other, and the outhole is labeled "A REJOUER" ("to play again").
Little else is known about Fortuna's history, designer, or original release, but its unique playfield animation and payout format make it a fascinating example of early French coin-operated amusement games.
