Tour de France
About This Machine
Tour de France is a rare and enigmatic example of early pinball machinery, its manufacturer unknown. Photos of the game, located in France, show a playfield identical to Scott, Adickes & Cie's 1933 'Coupe D'Argent,' except that an unpainted metal cone replaces each ornamental silver cup, and it has a metal cup on the left side of the coin door that Coupe D'Argent lacks. The owner identified the theme as the 1933 Tour de France bicycle race, likely based on French city names printed on the partially obscured orange paper apron, which also shows the game's name as "TOU....CE."
Gameplay is defined by six snap traps, which pose a significant challenge to players seeking high scores. These sudden and unpredictable obstacles were characteristic of the pins-and-pockets style typical of early 1930s pinball design.
The close resemblance to Coupe D'Argent, combined with its scarce documentation, makes Tour de France a fascinating subject for collectors and historians tracing the lineage of early French pinball machines.
