Whoopee Game
About This Machine
The Whoopee Game, manufactured by the enigmatic Game-O-Golf Mfg. Co., Inc. of Chicago, Illinois, is a fascinating piece of pure mechanical pinball history that has managed to evade detailed documentation. As one of the few surviving examples from an unknown era, this machine holds significant importance for enthusiasts seeking to understand the evolution of the game.
Its gameplay features a unique hand-placing system, where players must manually insert each ball into play via holes in the cabinet's right and left sides, respectively. This manual intervention adds an element of strategy and skill, as players must carefully choose which balls to send into play and navigate the rules that govern their movement. Notably, if a special gold-colored Whoopee Ball lands in either alley, the game is forfeited – an intriguing mechanic that suggests this machine may have been designed with elements of risk-reward.
While little is known about its design, art, or theme, the Whoopee Game's cabinet measures 57 3/4 inches long, 28 1/2 inches wide, and 30 1/2 inches high, indicating a compact footprint that would have fit neatly into early pinball parlors. The fact that nickel play was used suggests this machine may have been marketed as a more accessible option for players with limited budgets – another aspect of its history waiting to be uncovered by enthusiasts.

- Notable Features:
- Nickel play. Balls are delivered at start of game to an external trough on the right front side of cabinet. Player hand-places each ball into the right-side alley via a hole in the wood rail above the trough. The rules indicate if a ball shot into play returns to this right-side alley, the player forfeits a ball by hand-placing one of the unplayed balls into a left-side alley via a hole in the left-side wood rail. Also, if the special gold-colored Whoopee Ball lands in either of these alleys, the game is forfeited. Cabinet measures 57 3/4 inches long, 28 1/2 inches wide, and 30 1/2 inches high.
