Crazy 15 (クレイジー15)
About This Machine
Crazy 15 (クレイジー15), manufactured by Komaya Co., Ltd. of Kobe, Japan in 1965, is an electro-mechanical pinball machine built around a 'Happiness' theme. It was successful enough that Komaya released an improved version, 'New Crazy 15,' in 1977.
The game's mechanics are distinctive: two flippers that are not impulse flippers are activated by pressing a red button on the lockdown bar, while a green button on the lockdown bar serves the ball to a manual ball shooter. Nine trap holes are arranged so that lighting lamps in a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line on the backglass (totaling 15 points) wins a replay, per the surviving flyer text, which was aimed at players 'from kids to adults.'
Crazy 15's accessible ruleset and 'Happiness' theme made it a notable early release for Komaya, a manufacturer that operated from 1965 until 2015. While details about its designer remain unknown, Crazy 15 stands as a well-documented early example of Japanese pinball manufacturing.
