About This Machine

Circus, released by Brunswick Manufacturing Company in 1980, was the final release in Brunswick's home pinball line, which the company ran from 1976 to 1980 as a side venture alongside its core bowling equipment business. As a solid-state, four-player home model, Circus uses a single score display on its plexiglass backglass shared by all players.

The circus/trapeze-themed playfield features two flippers, a pop bumper, a slingshot, five standup targets, and a spinning target -- a modest but functional feature set typical of home-market machines of the era, which prioritized affordability over the more elaborate feature sets of commercial arcade games. The woodgrain cabinet measures 46 inches long, 27 inches wide, and 64 inches high on its legs; Brunswick also produced this game in a red cabinet under a different model number.

Little is documented about Circus's designer or reception, but as Brunswick's last pinball release before it exited the home pinball market, it holds a notable place in the story of the late-1970s home pinball boom and its decline.
