Turfe
About This Machine
Turfe is a little-known electro-mechanical pinball machine known today only from a single surviving backglass, originally located in Brazil. That backglass is a copy of the artwork used on Gottlieb's 1975 'El Dorado,' but larger in both dimensions, with extra artwork along its margins not found on the original Gottlieb glass — measuring 22.1" wide by 23.1" tall.
Gottlieb typically shipped knock-down kits to Brazil with its name left in cursive on the glass but its logo rectangle removed, and this Turfe glass follows that pattern. However, differences in the replay window style and the oversized glass — which would not fit a standard Gottlieb wedge-head backbox — suggest this was not an official Gottlieb knock-down kit, but rather a locally made, unauthorized copy.
The machine's theme is categorized as Western, likely tied to its 'El Dorado' source art, but a former owner in Brazil noted that "Turfe" is the Portuguese term for horse racing, a sport that was intensely popular there in the 1970s — suggesting the horse depicted on the backglass may have been meant to evoke that connection rather than a straightforward frontier theme. Beyond the backglass itself, no other details of Turfe's design, mechanisms, or manufacturer have been documented.
