Ajax
About This Machine
Ajax is an electro-mechanical pinball machine known to be a conversion ("revamp") of Gottlieb's 1940 game 'Score Card.' Its manufacturer is unknown, and its exact date is uncertain: the earliest clear reference to it as a converted game appears in a April 1942 issue of The Billboard, though an earlier 1941 reference to "Ajax" as a counter game exists without confirming it as the same revamped title.
As a pre-flipper era EM pinball, Ajax would have relied on simple mechanical scoring elements — plungers, targets, and rollovers activated via electromechanical switches and relays — rather than the flipper-based gameplay that wouldn't arrive in pinball until 1947. Beyond its conversion history, no further details of its design, art, or theme have been documented.
With so little surviving documentation, Ajax remains a hard-to-pin-down piece of early-1940s pinball history, valuable chiefly as an example of the era's common practice of converting existing cabinets into "new" games rather than building from scratch.
