Jive Time
About This Machine
Jive Time, manufactured by Martel of Madrid, Spain, is an electro-mechanical pinball machine with a music and singing theme. It is a Spanish-built copy of Williams' 1970 original of the same name.
Key gameplay features include a plunger skill shot and a mechanical backbox animation in which an arrow spins — a striking visual effect for the era. The machine's layout features multiple lanes, including a left drop lane with a detour gate, adding complexity and challenge to the game. A mini-rollover button and an up-post between the flippers provide additional scoring opportunities.
Jive Time's design incorporates a range of targets, from pop bumpers and slingshots to standup targets and kick-out holes, creating a dynamic single-player gameplay experience. Notably, the bonus ladder is scored via the backbox spinner rather than the outhole, adding an unusual scoring quirk. As one of Martel's known pinball releases, Jive Time offers an interesting look at how Spanish manufacturers adapted established American designs for their local market.
