Polo
About This Machine
Polo, an electro-mechanical pinball machine from the Spanish manufacturer Talleres del Llobregat S.A. (Automaticos), shares its playfield layout with Williams' 1963 machine 'Big Deal,' a common practice among some European manufacturers of the era who based their designs on successful American machines. Polo's own theme centers on the sport of polo, with horse-and-rider imagery throughout.
The single-player game includes two flippers, three pop bumpers, four passive bumpers, two slingshots, and four standup targets. A large non-kicking rebound rubber sits between and below the flippers, and the cabinet features metal legs and rails, each fitted with a cigarette holder, along with a wedge-shaped head design common to machines of this style and period. The maximum displayed score is 1,999 points.
Little is documented about Polo's designer or release date, but as a Spanish reinterpretation of a Williams design, it's a notable example of how American pinball layouts were adapted for the European market.
