About This Machine

Demolition Man, designed by Dennis Nordman and released by Williams Electronics Games in February 1994, brought the Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes science-fiction film to the playfield as part of Williams/Midway's "SuperPin" line of widebody games. Built on the Williams WPC platform with DCS sound, it enjoyed a healthy production run of 7,019 confirmed units.

The game is best remembered for its unconventional controls and toys. Upright player handles with trigger buttons activate the flippers, with thumb buttons to launch balls, an alternative to the traditional cabinet buttons. The Cryo Claw, a magnetic ball lifter fed by an elevator from the playfield, lets players carry the ball and drop it into their choice of awards. Two Matchbox cars serve as sequential captive balls at a car-crash feature, and a custom captive ball forms the Retina Scan shot. Underneath it all is a fast widebody layout with three flippers, two pop bumpers, three slingshots, three ramps, an automatic plunger, and five multiball modes, with an operator option allowing one buy-in ball per player.

The artwork is by Linda Deal and Doug Watson, with music and sound by Jon Hey. According to Watson, the backglass went through serious difficulty because the film's production team kept rejecting his designs; he eventually learned the rejections came from Wesley Snipes, who did not want to appear as a crazed character. The final backglass is consequently simpler than early designs, with all three characters given "mathematically equal" coverage and "handsome" features. Its distinctive toys and controls have kept Demolition Man a favorite among fans of 1990s Williams pinball.
