About This Machine

Primus, designed by Dennis Nordman with artwork by Jeremy "Zombie Yeti" Packer (and a second artist known as "Zoltron"), is a 2018 solid-state pinball machine manufactured by Stern Pinball as a private-label release for the American rock band Primus — the Stern brand appears only on the cabinet's manufacturing sticker. The game reuses the playfield layout that first appeared on Stern's 2015 'Whoa Nellie! Big Juicy Melons,' rethemed with the band's music and imagery. Production is confirmed at 108 units, manufactured and shipped starting December 2018, priced at $7,995 when new.

Gameplay includes two flippers, four pop bumpers, a passive bumper, two slingshots, eight star rollovers, two bullseye targets, a kick-out hole, and a free ball return lane, along with a plunger skill shot and custom speech. Each of the four players' scores is tracked on shared electro-mechanical score reels, and the top four lanes light the pop bumpers when hit. A small apron-mounted LCD displays the replay value during attract mode and assists with operator diagnostics.

Visually, Primus stands out with green powder-coated metal armor, backglass frame, and legs, along with a reverse-printed glass backglass (rather than a translite) and a custom ball shooter knob. As a band-branded private-label machine, it offers a distinctive collectible for both pinball enthusiasts and fans of the group.
