About This Machine

Amazon Hunt, designed by Ed Krynski with artwork by Larry Day, was released by Gottlieb in September 1983 on the System 80A solid-state platform, with a confirmed production run of 1,515 units. Krynski, one of the most prolific designers in pinball history, here revisited familiar territory: the playfield layout invites comparison to Gottlieb's 1975 EM hit 'Fast Draw'.

The four-player game offers two flippers, three pop bumpers, four standup targets, two 5-bank drop targets, two kick-out holes, and dual inlanes. Notably, it has no slingshots — an unusual omission for the era that changes the ball's behavior in the lower playfield and gives the game a distinctive feel. The two banks of drop targets anchor the scoring, in classic Gottlieb fashion.

Amazon Hunt was later reused as the basis for conversion kits (models 684C and 684D), an artifact of Gottlieb's efforts to keep games earning during the difficult arcade market of the mid-1980s. For enthusiasts, it represents an interesting snapshot of Gottlieb's System 80A period, when the company blended proven EM-era layouts with solid-state electronics.
