Deluxe 46
About This Machine
The Rock-ola Manufacturing Corporation's Deluxe 46 is an electro-mechanical payout pinball machine from the early days of the industry. Produced in October 1935 by the Chicago firm that would later become far better known for its jukeboxes, it dates from the brief window (1932-1938) in which Rock-ola was active in the pin game business, and from the transitional era in which electro-mechanical components were beginning to supplement purely mechanical designs.
As a payout machine, the Deluxe 46 dispensed winnings directly to the player. Its signature feature is a payout drawer on the lower front of the cabinet that swings out to give access to the payout cup. Reportedly, the payout unit for this game was made by the Western Equipment and Supply Company.
The cabinet was advertised as 46 inches long by 22 inches wide, the length presumably lending the game its name. Little else is documented about this specific model's design, art, or theme, but the Deluxe 46 remains an intriguing piece of pinball history, offering a glimpse into the payout-game side of the industry during its formative years.
