Firefly
About This Machine
The Firefly is an electro-mechanical pinball machine designed by Harry Williams for Williams Electronics that was never produced -- it exists only as a design drawing, one of the games documented in TLPFOHW (The Lost Pinball Machines of Harry Williams). As an unbuilt design, it offers a glimpse of concepts Williams was exploring rather than a machine that ever reached the market.
On paper, the Firefly's design included two flippers, three pop bumpers, eight standup targets, and four electromagnets, along with an upper left kicker lane, a left outlane kickback, and a right outlane ball return gate. The electromagnets in particular suggest a level of complexity and challenge that would have been notable had the design been realized, as they could attract or repel the ball depending on their configuration.
No theme or art design is documented for the Firefly, consistent with a game that never advanced beyond the drawing stage. As one of Harry Williams's unproduced concepts, it remains an intriguing footnote in the study of early pinball design rather than a machine that players ever encountered on location.
