Hot Hand
About This Machine
Hot Hand, designed by Harry Williams, was originally released by Stern in 1979 and manufactured under license in Australia by Leisure & Allied Industries (LAI) of Perth the same year. This Solid State Electronic machine uses a cards/gambling theme, common to the era, with 324 confirmed knock-down units produced by LAI alongside roughly 3,793 full games produced by Stern itself.
The gameplay experience on Hot Hand is defined by a large rotating flipper at the top of the playfield, which slowly turns throughout play. A ball resting in any of the ten "rollover pockets" near this flipper scores points continuously until dislodged by the rotating flipper, requiring players to adapt their strategy mid-game. Three pop bumpers, a 5-bank drop target, and a spinning target are also strategically placed, along with an upper left kicker lane.
The LAI-built cabinets are not stamped with the serial number found on the Stern originals; instead, a manufacturer plate on the back of the cabinet carries an LAI serial number. While not much additional information is available about the machine's Australian production run, its unique rotating-flipper mechanic makes it a distinctive find for pinball enthusiasts.
