Hoops
About This Machine
Hoops, manufactured by Genco Manufacturing Company in July 1938, is not a pinball machine but a pure mechanical tabletop/counter basketball game - one of the earlier basketball-themed coin-operated amusements. Priced at $29.50 when new, it offered a compact, self-contained play experience suited to counters in stores and arcades.
Gameplay centered on 7 balls per play, using rubber balls 1 1/2 inches in diameter. As a purely mechanical device with no electrical components, Hoops relied entirely on physical mechanisms to guide play - typical of tabletop counter games from the late 1930s.
Little further documentation survives about Hoops' designer or specific design details, but its early basketball theme and tabletop format make it a notable, if obscure, entry in Genco's history of pre-war coin-operated games.
