About This Machine

Dracula, designed by Harry Williams, was manufactured in 1979 by Leisure & Allied Industries (LAI) of Perth, Australia, under license from Stern, which produced the original American version the same year. This Australian edition was assembled from knock-down games shipped from Stern, with only 262 units confirmed built — a fraction of the 3,350 full games Stern produced itself. It stands as a rare artifact of pinball's early solid-state era, when electromechanical games were still common.

The machine's supernatural theme is expressed through a busy playfield: three flippers, three pop bumpers, one passive bumper, two slingshots, five standup targets, five star rollovers, a 4-bank and a 3-bank of drop targets, a kick-out hole, a spinning target, and a horseshoe lane. This dense mix of targets and shots gives Dracula the aim-and-precision style of play typical of late-1970s solid-state tables.

Distinguishing this LAI-built version from its Stern cousin are a few physical quirks: its cabinet interior and underside are fully painted (unlike the US version), the known example lacks the licensing text found on some Stern backglasses, and it carries an LAI manufacturer's plate with its own serial number on the back of the cabinet instead of the stamped serial numbers used on Stern units. These details make it a notable curiosity for collectors interested in international variants of classic American pinball designs.
