About This Machine

Leisure & Allied Industries' Galaxy (1980) is the Australian-licensed version of Stern's 1980 solid-state pinball machine of the same name, produced in Perth under the LAI trade name with only 183 knock-down units confirmed. The game carries an outer space theme and was originally designed by Harry Williams with artwork by Bob Timm for Stern's release, upon which this Australian edition is directly based.

Gameplay features a full complement of period mechanics: two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, four star rollovers, three standup targets, a 4-bank drop target, a spinning target, a kick-out saucer, a kickback lane, and dual inlanes on both sides of the playfield, giving players many ways to navigate and score.

What distinguishes this Australian version from its American counterpart are small production details rather than design changes: the backglass here omits licensing text found on the Stern version, and the cabinet carries an LAI manufacturer plate with its own serial number instead of Stern's stamped serial. As a licensed regional production of an established Stern title, Galaxy remains a notable example of how pinball manufacturing was localized for international markets in the early 1980s.
