Daffy Derby
About This Machine
Daffy Derby is not a machine that ever reached production -- it exists only as a Williams Manufacturing Company playfield drawing (Model 62), dated October 23, 1951, and signed with designer Harry Williams' initials. It was closely related to Williams' Model 61 'Hoss-Feathers,' another unproduced horse-racing design, and shares that game's eight pop bumpers, numbered 1 through 8, used to advance horses on a backbox display.
Unlike Hoss-Feathers, however, the Daffy Derby drawing shows no flippers at all: the ball simply caroms down the playfield, advancing horses via rebound switches before draining out one of several unlabeled lanes. A long outhole trough sized for five balls indicates it was designed as a single-player game.
Because it was never built, no example of this Daffy Derby design is known to exist. Williams later reused the name for its actually-produced 1954 title, also called 'Daffy Derby' (Model 110), which should not be confused with this earlier, unproduced design.
