Buccaneer
About This Machine
The Buccaneer is a rare electro-mechanical pinball machine made in Brazil by J. Esteban of São Paulo. Its exact year of manufacture is unknown. Its playfield layout is copied from Gottlieb's 1977 'Jungle Queen', while its backglass and playfield artwork are copied from Gottlieb's 1976 'Buccaneer', making it a South American tribute build rather than an original design.
The machine features four flippers, three pop bumpers, two 5-bank drop targets, and two kick-out holes. Notably, it has no slingshots - an unusual omission for an EM machine that changes how the ball behaves along the outer lanes and requires players to adjust their strategy accordingly.
The Buccaneer's pirate-themed design carries over the artwork from Gottlieb's original 1976 game, with intricate graphics that transport players to the high seas. While little is known about its precise history, its rarity as a Brazilian-made adaptation of an American design offers collectors an interesting piece of pinball's global history.
