About This Machine

Daffie, manufactured by Williams Electronics in May 1968, is a notable entry in Williams' late-1960s lineup. Designed by Steve Kordek with artwork by Christian Marche, this single-player add-a-ball game was the first of four Williams games to feature zipper flippers - a mechanism Bally had introduced two years earlier and which Williams referred to as "closing flipper action." When triggered, the flippers close together at the center, eliminating the center drain and changing the risk dynamics of the lower playfield.

A key aspect of Daffie's design is its emphasis on ball control and target variety. The playfield includes two zipper flippers, four pop bumpers, two slingshots, six rollover buttons, five standup targets, and a single drop target, plus an upper ball return gate. The drop target resets when the 1-2-3-4-5 sequence is completed, when the ball passes through the upper ball return gate, or at the start of a new game - a mechanism that adds an extra layer of strategy. The game's sounds come from a bell, a wooden box chime, and a knocker. Interestingly, the manufacturer's flyer shows five pop bumpers, but production games replaced the fifth with the drop target, and the playfield art behind it still shows the pop bumper placement.

Christian Marche's artwork captures the automobile and fashion culture of the late 1960s with his distinctive angular style. Confirmed production was 2,453 units, and the replay version of this game is Williams' 1968 'Doozie'. Daffie remains an attractive and challenging game for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
