Orbit
About This Machine
The Orbit is a rare electro-mechanical pinball machine from Procedimientos Electromagnéticos de Tanteo y Color of Madrid, Spain, produced under the trade name Petaco, S.A. between 1962 and 1977. It is a Spanish adaptation of Gottlieb's 1972 two-player 'Outer Space,' though it shares its name with the unrelated four-player Gottlieb's 1971 'Orbit.'
Gameplay on the Orbit is characterized by its dual flippers, three pop bumpers, and a slingshot, all set against an outer space theme that was popular in the 1960s and 70s. The machine's upper right ball return roll-under and right outlane ball return gate are also notable features, adding to the game's challenging play dynamics, along with an end-of-ball bonus. What makes the Orbit distinctive is its use of electro-mechanical components, a byproduct of its era-specific design, resulting in a more mechanical and tactile experience for players compared to later solid-state machines.
The Orbit's aesthetic is equally fascinating, with standup targets, a vari-target, and spinning target adding visual interest to the playfield. While little is known about its designer or production history, this machine remains an interesting piece of pinball heritage as a Spanish reworking of a Gottlieb design. As such, it's a notable find for any serious collector or enthusiast looking to experience a piece of pinball history firsthand.
