The Walking Dead (Premium)
About This Machine
The Walking Dead (Premium) from Stern Pinball, released in May 2015 and designed by John Borg with sound by Brian Schmidt and code by Lyman Sheats Jr., capitalized on the popularity of AMC's The Walking Dead television series. This solid-state electronic game brought the show's zombie apocalypse setting to the playfield with an array of interactive toys and mechanisms.
Gameplay is intense and dynamic, with a plethora of interactive elements that reward strategy and skill. The machine features an animated prison with a bashable, magnet-equipped zombie head, a Well Walker bash toy that rocks backward when hit to expose its "guts" (also captured by a magnet), and a Bicycle Girl bash toy. Three pop bumpers, two slingshots, three magnets, two spinning targets, and two star rollovers round out the shooting options, while a motorized mechanism beneath the flippers — activated by a button on the lockdown bar — launches the ball onto the playfield. Multiball play is also featured.
The Walking Dead's design and artwork capture the dark, post-apocalyptic atmosphere of the show; a translite is used in place of a traditional backglass, and the cabinet is decorated with decal artwork. Red-green-white LED general illumination and RGB LED playfield arrow inserts and star rollovers light the playfield. Voice characterizations for the game were performed by Fred Young.
