Shoot at the Moon with Mar-Ball
About This Machine
"Shoot at the Moon with Mar-Ball" is a Pure Mechanical pin game manufactured by the Dixie Music Co. (trading as Shayne Dixie Music Co.) of Miami, Florida, dated to June 1932. According to a contemporary trade report in Automatic Age (May 1932), it was a revamped version of the company's earlier 'Mar-Ball,' rebuilt at a new location after a fire destroyed the original factory. The game's full name comes directly from the announcement of that fire and also appears on its instruction card. It originally sold for $39.30.
Gameplay took place on a pins-and-pockets playfield with 27 trap holes and 2 free-play holes, framed by crescent moon-shaped ball guides and matching artwork. The cabinet was built from two-tone solid mahogany, giving the machine a distinctive look for its era.
No designer or additional background on the game's theme has been documented. Its rarity, its unusual backstory involving a factory fire, and its mahogany construction make "Shoot at the Moon with Mar-Ball" a distinctive artifact of the earliest years of the pin game industry.
