Crazy Race
About This Machine
Crazy Race is a rare example of solid-state electronic (SS) pinball design from Petaco, S.A. (Procedimientos Electromagnéticos de Tanteo y Color), a Spanish manufacturer based in Madrid that was active from 1962 to 1977. Petaco was the trade name used for games sold domestically in Spain; the same company also produced an export version of this game, released as Recel's 1978 'Crazy Race'.
The machine runs on the Recel System III MPU, a custom board unique to Recel/Petaco and based on the Rockwell PPS4 chipset - the same chipset used in early Gottlieb solid-state machines. Key gameplay features include a classic auto racing theme for up to four players.
Specific details of Crazy Race's playfield layout, rules, and scoring mechanisms are not well documented, which adds to the intrigue for enthusiasts researching lesser-known European pinball manufacturers. As one of Petaco's home-market offerings alongside its export sibling, Crazy Race is a notable piece of Spanish pinball history.
