About This Machine

The Cyclone is a beloved pinball machine from one of Williams Electronics' strongest periods. Designed by Barry Oursler with unmistakable artwork by Python Anghelo, it entered production in February 1988 and racked up a confirmed run of 9,408 units. Its signature toy is a Ferris wheel: a rotating Ferris wheel on the playfield actually carries the ball for a portion of its rotation - an idea with roots as far back as Allied Amusement's 1935 'Barrel Roll' - while a second, mechanically animated Ferris wheel revolves in the backbox, giving the game a wonderful carnival spectacle.

Gameplay-wise, the Cyclone offers a thrilling experience with its two flippers, three pop bumpers, and two ramps providing multiple paths for players to navigate. The elevated shooter channel allows for a skill shot that drops the ball onto a kicker, launching it into play. A single drop target guards a cellar hole feeding the scoop, adding an extra layer of strategy. The circus-carnival-fair theme, backed by Chris Granner's music and Bill Pfutzenreuter's software, makes it a standout in any collection.

A few fun details: designer Mark Ritchie provided the voice of the Carnival Barker, and a special version built for the Japanese market replaced the mechanical backbox wheel with a spinning light show. The machine weighs a substantial 241 lbs including legs - a testament to the robust construction that defined Williams' approach. With its captivating art, engaging gameplay, and showpiece Ferris wheel, the Cyclone remains an essential piece of late-1980s pinball history for enthusiasts and collectors alike.
