The Walking Dead (Limited Edition)
About This Machine
The Walking Dead (Limited Edition), released in November 2014 by Stern Pinball, is the premium version of the company's licensed pinball machine based on the AMC zombie-apocalypse TV series. Designed by John Borg, with sound by Brian Schmidt and software by Lyman F. Sheats Jr., this solid-state electronic machine features a unique blend of gameplay mechanics and special effects that set it apart from the Pro model.
The Walking Dead's gameplay is intense and action-packed, with players navigating hordes of zombies via features including 3 pop bumpers, 2 slingshots, and 3 magnets that add complexity and challenge. Notable toys include an animated prison with a bashable zombie head, a "Well Walker" bash toy that rocks backward when hit to expose "guts," a "Bicycle Girl" bash toy, and three illuminated heads in the playfield back wall. A motorized mechanism below the flippers, activated by a button on the lockdown bar, pivots to shoot the ball onto the playfield — a distinctive touch for this edition. Multiball mode adds further chaos as players scramble to contain multiple balls.
Visually, the Limited Edition is striking, with rust-colored powder-coated legs and armor providing a rugged, post-apocalyptic aesthetic, along with a mirrored backglass (rather than a translite) and full-spectrum RGB LED playfield inserts and star rollovers. This LE version came with a serialized number plate, a playfield signed by designer John Borg, and a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Gary Stern, carrying an MSRP of $8,595 and making it a sought-after collector's item among pinball enthusiasts.
