About This Machine

Red is an electro-mechanical machine from Williams Electronic Manufacturing Corporation, designed by Norm Clark with artwork by Art Stenholm, themed around automobile travel. It is, in fact, the same game as Williams' 1964 'Stop 'N' Go' -- the playfield still bears the 'Stop 'N' Go' name -- but rebadged with a different backglass reading 'Red.' The reason for the change isn't documented, but manufacturers sometimes altered names for export markets if the original name posed some kind of problem; several examples with this rebadged backglass have turned up in Europe, particularly Switzerland and France, suggesting it was an export variant rather than a one-off operator modification.

Gameplay features an "auto-shooter" between the flippers that propels the ball toward a swinging target, along with three pop bumpers, four passive bumpers, eight standup targets, and a kick-out hole (no slingshots). Players can choose 3- or 5-ball play, and a double match feature can be set to award 2, 5, or 10 replays. The maximum displayed score is 9,999 points per player.

Red's design and art carry over directly from Stop 'N' Go, reflecting Williams' late-EM-era style. Its unusual rebadging makes it a notable curiosity for collectors tracking regional variants of Williams' mid-1960s catalog.
