About This Machine

Ultra Attack (ウルトラアタック) is an electro-mechanical (EM) pinball machine from Japan Amusement Machine Company, Ltd. (Nihon Goraku-Ki Kabushikigaisha). Its exact release year is unknown, but the backglass, playfield, and cabinet prominently feature Ultraman, the hero of the tokusatsu television series that aired in Japan in 1966-1967, along with the Monster Attack Team (MAT) that battled alongside him. This licensed tie-in makes Ultra Attack a rare and culturally significant find, as it is the only known example of its kind, currently on display at the Japan Pinball Museum in Inuyama.

Gameplay centers on two flippers, unusually made of plastic disguised to look like wood, running on 100VAC. Three spinning bumpers rotate counter-clockwise around the playfield, and the ball is served from between the flippers. Rather than a fixed number of balls, Ultra Attack is a timed game — observed at roughly 67 seconds per play, though the timer is reportedly operator-adjustable. Landing the ball in the goal at the top of the playfield advances a round counter on the backglass, and reaching 10 goals lights the replay indicator for a single replay per game, accompanied by a bell.

Because the MAT designation is first documented in the 1970-1971 sequel series The Return of Ultraman, it's unclear whether this game was produced alongside the original 1966-1967 Ultraman broadcast or later, once the MAT concept had entered wider circulation. Either way, Ultra Attack stands as a unique artifact bridging Japanese tokusatsu television and the pinball medium.
