Doughboy De Luxe Senior
About This Machine
The Doughboy De Luxe Senior, manufactured by American Engineering Co. in 1932, is a pure mechanical (PM) pinball machine from the earliest days of the coin-operated amusement industry. Its cabinet was advertised as walnut, 38 inches long and 17 inches wide, giving it a distinguished look among machines of its era.
Gameplay on the Doughboy De Luxe Senior is entirely mechanical, without any flippers or electrical components (both would come decades later). A distinguishing feature is a metal jackpot attachment mounted on the front of the cabinet, which holds every fifth deposited coin for payout — a novel prize mechanism for its time, also sold separately so operators could convert other non-payout games into payout machines.
Little else is documented about this machine beyond period advertisements, including a June 1932 Billboard ad that priced the machine at $59.50. Despite the scarcity of information, its age and design make it a notable artifact from the earliest years of coin-operated pinball.
