About This Machine
Crossword, designed by Harry Williams with artwork by George Molentin, was manufactured by Williams Electronic Manufacturing Corporation in April 1959. This single-player electro-mechanical game (model number 211) takes its theme from puzzles and recreation, a fitting subject for the era's fascination with word games. Factory documentation shows the original playfield drawing was approved by Harry Mabs, drawn in October 1958 and completed that November.
The playfield offers two flippers, three pop bumpers, six passive bumpers, nine gobble holes, and a single kick-out hole. The nine gobble holes dominate the layout, and the absence of outlanes shifts the game's risk to those hungry holes: each one swallows the ball while awarding its score, forcing players to weigh points against ball time on every shot.
Designed by Harry Williams—the company's founder and one of the most influential figures in pinball history—Crossword is a solid representative of late-1950s Williams design and an appealing find for collectors of gobble-hole-era games.
