Bat-A-Ball
About This Machine
The Bat-A-Ball pinball machine was made by American Amusement Company of Chicago in 1946. It is a Pure Mechanical (PM) machine, advertised at the time as "mechanically perfect, no motors, gears, etc." -- reflecting a design built entirely without electricity.
Gameplay-wise, Bat-A-Ball is a floor-standing, upright, single-player machine with a baseball theme. Its Pure Mechanical design relies on manual, spring- and gravity-driven mechanisms rather than any electrical components, requiring players to develop precise timing and skill without the aid of flippers or powered features common in later machines.
American Amusement Company also produced a counter-top version of this game, 'Junior League Bat-A-Ball,' also in 1946. As a piece of pinball history, Bat-A-Ball offers a glimpse into the mechanical, coin-operated amusements that preceded the rise of electro-mechanical and solid-state pinball.
