Aquarius
About This Machine
The Aquarius is an electro-mechanical (EM) pinball machine from Procedimientos Electromagnéticos de Tanteo y Color, a Spanish manufacturer active from 1962 to 1977 under the trade name Petaco, S.A. Its exact year of production is unknown. Notably, this machine is a close copy of Gottlieb's 1970 'Aquarius,' with one distinctive change: on the center red ring of the backglass, each round astrological symbol has been replaced with its corresponding number, 1 through 12.
Gameplay-wise, the Aquarius features two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, ten standup targets, and five kick-out holes, offering a challenging experience typical of its electro-mechanical era. The wedge-shaped head backbox adds to the machine's visual profile.
The Aquarius's Astrology theme is evident in its artwork, echoing the growing interest in mysticism and astrology during the era. As a Spanish licensed-style copy of an American Gottlieb design, it offers an interesting case study in how pinball designs crossed borders during the 1970s.
