Lai-Lani
About This Machine
Lai-Lani is a backglass concept created for Bally Manufacturing Corporation, with artwork by Lester Hilbrich dated September 30, 1947. As far as is known, this design was never produced as an actual game, unless it later surfaced under a different name not yet matched to this artwork.
The centerpiece artwork, showing a woman with a parrot, was adapted from the painting "Singapore" by artist Henry Clive, which appeared on the cover of the October 9, 1938 issue of The American Weekly - the same source image Hilbrich used for Williams' similarly unproduced 'Aloha' backglass, making the two designs an interesting point of comparison.
Because Lai-Lani was never manufactured, nothing is documented about its intended gameplay. Its Hawaii theme fits within the American Places motif popular in pinball art of the era, and the surviving artwork offers a glimpse of Bally's design proposals during 1947.
