Kansas
About This Machine
The Kansas pinball machine is a rare find from Maquinas Recreativas Sociedad Anonima (Maresa) of Madrid, Spain. It is a copy of Gottlieb's 1975 'Quick Draw'; a two-player version of the same design was released by Maresa as 'Laramie' in 1976. The American West theme, evoking cowboys and outlaws, was already a familiar genre for pinball at the time.
Kansas features two flippers, three pop bumpers, a pair of 5-bank drop targets, four stand-up targets, two kick-out holes, and dual inlanes, along with an end-of-ball bonus. Notably, unlike many contemporaries, it has no slingshots. The dual-inlane layout added an extra layer of challenge, requiring players to manage the ball's path as it moved between the two lanes.
The machine's wedge head and drop-down cabinet are characteristic of EM pinball design of the period. Little information is available about the individuals at Maresa responsible for adapting Gottlieb's design, but as a well-featured European copy of a popular American title, Kansas is a worthwhile find for collectors interested in Spanish pinball manufacturing history.
